RAD+ar, an Indonesian architectural firm, has created a stunning rooftop terrace for the Aruma restaurant and bar in Jakarta. The wave-like concrete terrace, aptly named Split Garden, offers a unique and immersive dining experience.

Located in the bustling Kemang district, Aruma's design aimed to maximize the limited space by incorporating multiple levels and terraces. The architects sought to integrate nature into the urban environment, creating a tranquil oasis amidst the city's hustle and bustle.

The core concept behind Split Garden was to explore the potential of split-level design to create distinct zones while maintaining a compact footprint. The project blends contemporary architectural elements with the tropical surroundings, resulting in a harmonious and inviting space.

The underside of the sweeping concrete roof forms a dramatic ceiling for the ground floor restaurant area, curving downwards to create intimate and cozy spaces. A dividing wall separates the dining area from the kitchen and facilities, which occupy a southern section of the building topped by a smaller, sloping roof. A long, narrow skylight illuminates the restaurant below, providing a natural source of light.

A ramp leads from the front garden to a mezzanine bar that opens onto the rooftop terrace, which further extends upwards to the east. This multi-level layout allows for a seamless transition between different spaces, offering a variety of dining experiences for patrons.

Incorporated into each of the stepped segments of the rooftop terrace are seating areas and planters, creating private and sheltered spaces that overlook the garden below. The exposed concrete adds a raw and industrial element that contrasts with the lush greenery, while lighting strips illuminate the terrace segments both internally and externally.

RAD+ar's Split Garden is a testament to the firm's ability to create innovative and sustainable architectural designs. The project showcases the potential of urban spaces to be transformed into vibrant and inviting destinations.
