KEY HIGHLIGHTS
A house that had to become a bridge — A 7-metre-deep gorge cut by a stream at the Karjat site split the plot in two, so no conventional foundation could work; Wallmakers designed a fully occupiable suspension bridge instead.
Three constraints, one concept — The design had to span the gorge, leave clearance for a JCB excavator to pass beneath it, and rely almost entirely on materials found within five miles of the site.
Four hyperbolic parabolas — The 100-foot structure is built from four hyperbolic paraboloid frames, a mathematically efficient double-curved form that carries heavy loads with minimal material.
Tension meets compression — Steel tendons and pipes give the structure tensile strength, while a thatch-and-mud composite provides the compressive strength, letting the two systems work together like a real suspension bridge.
A skin inspired by a pangolin — After testing fish-scale layouts, the team modeled the thatch cladding on pangolin scales, which flex with movement while staying watertight across a double curve.
Only four footings — The entire home touches the ground at just four points, minimizing disruption to the gorge's natural contours and streambeds.
Mud as armor and adhesive — A mud plaster coating seals the thatch against pests (the usual downfall of thatched roofs) while adding real compressive strength, eliminating the need for a vertical suspension tower.
A cocoon-like interior — Exposed mud walls and ceilings, a central oculus courtyard open to rain and sunlight, four bedrooms, jute/mesh screens, and reclaimed ship-deck timber flooring define the living spaces.
Vinu Daniel and Wallmakers' philosophy — Founded in 2007 and known for techniques like the Debris Wall, the studio treats site constraints as design opportunities rather than obstacles, relearning nearly-lost thatching craft for this project.
A bigger architectural statement — Bridge House shows that low-tech, vernacular materials and contextual thinking can outperform default reaches for concrete and steel, turning a site's hardest limitation into its clearest design logic.
